River Condition Assessment

Understanding a river's physical condition is essential for development near watercourses, river restoration projects and Water Framework Directive compliance. We deliver MoRPh-based assessments that quantify habitat quality and guide sensitive design.

Overview

River condition assessment evaluates the physical (hydromorphological) state of a river reach — its channel form, flow types, substrate, bank structure, vegetation and floodplain connectivity. This information is critical for understanding how a development or engineering project may affect the watercourse, and for designing interventions that protect or improve its ecological status.

We use the Modular River Physical (MoRPh) survey methodology, developed for the Environment Agency, which produces quantified data on river habitat condition that feeds directly into Water Framework Directive classification and BNG river condition scoring. MoRPh is also the standard tool for monitoring river restoration outcomes.

Assessments are carried out at the reach scale, typically covering 500 m lengths mapped into 10 m modules. The data supports development impact assessment, Environmental Impact Assessment, river restoration feasibility, BNG river unit calculation and WFD mitigation measure design.

When you need this

  • Your development is adjacent to or will affect a watercourse
  • A Water Framework Directive assessment is required for your project
  • You need river condition data for BNG river unit calculations
  • River restoration or channel modification is being planned
  • An EIA requires hydromorphological baseline data for a watercourse

Our approach

  1. 01
    Desk study

Review of WFD classification data, historical maps, aerial photography and Environment Agency records to understand the watercourse's baseline condition and pressures.

  2. 02
    MoRPh field survey

Systematic reach-scale survey mapping channel form, flow types, substrate, bank profiles, vegetation, woody debris, modifications and floodplain features in 10 m modules.

  3. 03
    Condition scoring

Field data is processed through the MoRPh scoring system to produce a quantified condition assessment for each module and the reach as a whole.

  4. 04
    Reporting and recommendations

Results are reported with condition maps, WFD status assessment and clear recommendations for mitigation, enhancement or restoration measures.

Frequently asked questions

01What is MoRPh?+
MoRPh (Modular River Physical survey) is a standardised field methodology developed for the Environment Agency. It records physical river habitat features at a fine scale (10 m modules), producing a quantified condition score that feeds into Water Framework Directive classification and BNG river condition assessment.
02When is a river condition assessment needed for planning?+
It is typically required when a development is adjacent to a watercourse and the LPA or Environment Agency needs to understand the project's impact on the river's physical condition. It is also needed for BNG calculations that include river habitats.
03Can river condition assessment inform restoration design?+
Yes — this is one of the primary uses. MoRPh data identifies the specific pressures and modifications affecting a reach, allowing restoration measures to be targeted at the features that will deliver the greatest ecological benefit.
